What was Fritz Perls and Virginia Satir after as each of them took a different route to actualizing one’s authentic self? Both were second generation leaders in the 1960s/ 1970s Human Potential Movement which was launched through the discoveries of Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers. And what was Maslow and Rogers after? How did they conceptualize the abstract idea of ‘self- acutalization?’ The answer is actually pretty simple. They envisioned people becoming “fully functioning” (Rogers) or “full alive, fully human” (Maslow).

Maslow and Rogers believed that there is within every person the power to understand life and to live fully by tapping into that power and unleashing it. So did Perls and Satir. If the NLP founders and developers modeled Perls and Satir, then is it any wonder then that NLP became a model of unleashing human potential and power? I think not. And that’s why in updating the NLP Model I’ve put empowerment as the first and primary application.
