You may be wondering, “Why write about hell?” Well in my early adult
years, I served as a minister and if there was anything that church folk were
constantly fearful about, it was hell. They didn’t want to go there! Well,
who would? It’s was never pictured as a desired vacation spot. Then as I
moved into Pastoral Counseling and eventually into clinical therapy, I meet
more and more people tormented by the fear that they had done something
wrong and they were “doomed to hell.”
I once entertained such fears, but the more I studied the scriptures, the less
I the fears bothered me. Eventually I studied myself out of the “endless
torture” view of hell and began to dare to share that information. One of my
colleagues who I graduated seminary with was shocked that I no longer
believed in hell. Later when we met up, he actually reproached me. “You
don’t believe in hell?” he acted as if I had committed the unpardonable sin.
He was genuinely concerned for my soul. I could tell he wanted to say
something else, probably confront me.
