If leadership is designed to do anything, the design is to enable people to step up and unleash their potentials. We lead people to be a part of something greater than themselves. After all, that’s the purpose of working and collaborating. We have a vision and a project that we cannot do alone. So whether it is a business, a community organization, or a family— the purpose of leaders is never about itself, but about a larger purpose.

This offers us one criteria for determining the design of leadership. Leaders ought to be looking for people with the talent that’s needed, the potential that’s needed, and the passion that’s needed. Once people have been identified, then we want to train, equip, and integrate them with others so that they can contribute to the larger whole. This is not always easy.
