If there is any skill that seems to be most lacking in a great many trainers and coaches, it is the skill of selling. Why is that? One reason lies in how a person thinks about selling. What do you think it is? In the first article in this series I wrote: Selling is training, selling is coaching, selling is communicating, selling is relating. What are you actually doing when you sell something? Let’s start with relating. You are informing someone about the value of what you have to offer.

If you think selling is manipulating, controlling, forcing, being obnoxious or rude, or anything like that—I can predict that you will more than likely be turned off to selling. And why not? Most trainers and coaches are in the people business and care a lot of enabling people to learn, to grow, and to become all that they can become. Selling describes the business part of training, the aspect of getting people into the door and signed up for the training.
