GLITTERING GENERALITIES

When it comes to writing—to be an effective writer, you have to give your readers specifics. Yet to do that, you have do something else: namely, learn avoid thinking and writing in glittering generalities. Now to do that is not easy. And that’s one of the reasons why effective writing can be difficult and challenging for the new writer.

As a writer, if you write in general statements, regardless of how insightful you may think they are, you will not be providing your reader anything substantial. I have a suspicion that with the internet, social media, emails, copy writing, etc., people are being trained in how to write in vague, non-specific, ambiguous generalities. They are trained to write to everyone and that leads to making sweeping statements that leave out the details as they learn to write in broad strokes rather than with precise specificity.
