Understanding the structure of resilience requires knowing and changing the layers of meaning of how you process setbacks, through the layers of thoughts-and-feelings you create in your mind. Reflexivity, meta-states, and recursivity offer the structural processes to break down, recognize, and change how we represent, manage, and apply resilience.

In Neuro-Semantics, we refer to states as the feelings about a thought or way of thinking. Meta-states refer to higher states, about and beyond our first thought and level state of thoughts and feelings. States and meta-states are the engines of reflexivity and function in our mind looping the first thought or idea with the second, third state, and so on, then looping them around further with other ideas, thoughts, and feelings.

Meta-states provide the quality and texture of the state we are in our minds when we handle life ups-and-downs. They help us build up more permanent thought structures in the form of beliefs, points of view, attitudes, principles, conclusions, understanding, and so on, turning, spiraling and spinning around these thoughts and feelings. There is an entire meta-cognition field that studies the thinking about our thinking and the processes to plan, monitor, and assess personal understanding and performance.
