We do that to emphasize that even if childhood was a horrible nightmare, you are not stuck with remembering it that way. You do not have to leave it encoded it that way or retain that memory. You can change it. You can change it by updating the ideas (e.g., beliefs, decisions, conclusions) that you picked up or created as a kid as mentioned in the last article. Catching the Cognitive Distortions that you still use, you can also identify and replace them with adult thinking patterns. Now while that’s a great beginning, but that’s not all.
