There is a problem with regular distractions—they encourage shallow processing. Does that ever happen to you? Regularly using digital tools and social media made me aware of their impacts when focusing on demanding tasks. Emails, social media, and messaging apps often disrupted my focus, and multitasking made it hard for me to stay focused on what I needed to do. They were undermining the flow I needed for productive activities such as training and writing.
In reading Cal Newport's work on How to Enhance Focus and Improve Productivity, he describes the state where individuals become ensnared by the pervasive and addictive nature of digital tools and social media. He refers to this as the digital trap, which leads to a significant decrease in their ability to perform what he calls deep, meaningful work.
