Many problem-solving processes lead to good results. Yet, many organizations do not use rigorous approaches to problem solving. Sometimes, the results are disappointing. The problem may not be in the approach. The missing piece in models in the willingness to love problems. This article talks about my experience in solving a critical, complex problem. No one in the organization seemed to own the problem.

In addition to the case study, I am using material from Chapter 13 in the book, Creative Solutions, by Michael Hall. The five aspects of learning to love problems are: Clarify, calm, detect, decide, and embrace. They are not steps in a linear process. These five aspects to loving problems will emerge depending on your approach, the client and the situation.
