Self As Instrument

If you’ve ever worn dark sunglasses when the sun is scorching hot, you would’ve experienced the relief of being protected from the blinding reflection of the sun’s rays. In this case, wearing the sunglasses would have been helpful and appropriate. Now, imagine wearing the same protective dark sunglasses at night while walking on the unlit alleys of an unfamiliar city. The sunglasses that provided relief and protection may now be obstructing your view and could cause you more harm. These glasses are like the different lenses we use in our daily lives. They may be beliefs, meta-programs, different kinds of meanings and worldviews. While sometimes they can be helpful, we might not be aware of when they distort our view of reality. As trainers, we offer our lenses to the people we train. If we don’t clean them, we might be offering inappropriate or even stained lenses.
