How to be Precise in Coaching #3

TO COACH PRECISELY, THINK PRECISELY

If you want to coach with the kind of precision that we promote in Meta-Coaching, you have to learn a new kind of way of thinking.  You have to learn to think precisely.  Now if that strikes you as obvious, you’re right.  And yet, obvious as it is—the great majority of coaches have not developed that skill.  And as a result, they cannot do truly high quality work.

Given that, what is the problem?  What stops any of us from thinking precisely?  The biggest problem is language itself.  Language, by its very nature, is sloppy.  It is loose, it is over-generalized, it is vague, and it is fluffy.  And when it comes to everyday language, this is true with a vengeance.  As evidence of this, look up any everyday word in the dictionary and what will you find?  You will find multiple definitions of the word.  That means that with everyday words and language, you truly never know from the words themselves which definition the person is using.  It could be anyone of the seven to thirty definitions or none of them.
