“If it’s a comedy, fall over it. If it’s a drama, smash it.”

Michael Caine, British Actor

I recently came across a video where the actor says those words as he talked about finding a chair suddenly landing in his way and blocking the door in an acting scene. His words reminded me of the difficulties we encounter in the training room, and of one specific difficulty I had a few years back during my job with a training company providing corporate training.

It was the first day of a full-house, two-day training and during the second session, I started getting eye rolls from one of the attendees and her body language was clearly that of someone who was totally disengaged. I thought that I would address it with her during the following break but unfortunately, before I reach that milestone, her frustration broke out with the words, “I’m not doing this, this is a joke!”
