Dealing with traumatic memories

My brother John was riding on a bus through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel in New York city. Smoke and ash filled North America's longest underwater traffic tunnel. The bus stopped. John got off and ran through the tunnel toward Brooklyn. He worried about a torrent of water flooding the tunnel. And thought he should have persisted in swimming laps. Then he heard a voice call his name. He stopped and, with surprise, saw his 18-year-old neighbor from Staten Island. She stood frozen, shaking with fear and crying. She could not get a cell signal to call her parents. He took her hand and ran with her out of the tunnel to a fire station. There, John found someone who drove them over the Verrazano Bridge to Staten Island. John was alert and calm. She looked traumatized. It was 9/11, the day the World Trade Center collapsed.
