One of our original NLP tools to develop competence as a coach is using the hierarchy of values and applying the NLP Practitioner pattern of values elicitation. When you are training and working with Meta-Coaches, an effective training skill is to make the values hierarchy explicit so they understand when to ask meta-questions about their clients values.

The real question here is, can you decode a meaning maker? As a Meta-Coach we learn how to coach to our clients meaning construct. Therefore we coach to our clients meanings. If we are unable to determine our clients current meanings, we limit the performance of our coaching and the coaching gap will only be vaguely defined. Is this situation familiar to you as a Meta-Coach?

Awareness of our client’s current meaning-making is one of the first quality checks of our Meta- Coaching process. We do this within the first three questions of the Well-Formed Outcome questions to clarify the subject. The subject is the outcome the client wants, yet we need to understand the cause (i.e. what is stopping them from reaching their outcome now?). Let me explain in further detail.
