People who tend to think globally or generally rather than specifically and precisely are constantly asking me, “Okay, so how do I learn to think more specifically?” They especially tend to ask this question after getting feedback that they are missing so many details! I frequently stop a session and ask, “Are you going to ground this conversation?” Or, “Are you going to ask for any details?” And more often than not, the person says, “What details?”

Now once you have learned to listen for details, all of this can almost be like a comedy show. Missing the details the person keeps talking and coaching as if she knows what the other person is talking about when all along, she does not actually have a clue.

“What details? She said that she’s struggling to manage her children.” And these children, are they small children still at home or at they ...

“Yes, small children at home.” “Well, actually they are not, I have three children, 23, 20 and 17.”

“Oh ... that does make a difference.” Good. Carry on.
