DOING IT RIGHT
YET MISSING THE POINT
During our ACMC training in Bali Indonesia, I’ve noticed several times during the last few days that a coach can be performing the coaching skills right and yet miss the point of the coaching, the point of the client’s communication and/or outcome. This is not a case of one being important and the other not. Both are important. As a Meta-Coach you first learn to perform the skills correctly. That’s the foundation. You learn how to ask the 18 well-formed question properly (and not sloppily) because you have learned that when you fail to ask them properly/ correctly, you will not get the right kind of information from your client.
Throughout the ACMC training the focus is on learning how to perform the coaching skills so that with them, you can engage your client and facilitate the coaching. Then after that training, you will need to practice those skills under supervision. You will need to do some deliberate practice to refine them, streamline them, and learn how to do them as you learn to develop your own unique style of coaching.
