A RECIPE FOR DISASTER
When I did the ISNS Wisdoms on Discipline Thinking on Feb 21 this year, I came across a great quotation from Jim Collins in his book, Good to Great, about discipline. Now this quotation is in the context of an organization, but the spirit applies to our personal lives as well. Here is the quote:
A RECIPE FOR DISASTER
When I did the ISNS Wisdoms on Discipline Thinking on Feb 21 this year, I came across a great quotation from Jim Collins in his book, Good to Great, about discipline. Now this quotation is in the context of an organization, but the spirit applies to our personal lives as well. Here is the quote:
“When you have disciplined people, you don’t need hierarchy. When you have disciplined thought, you don’t need bureaucracy. When you have disciplined people, you don’t need excessive controls. When you combine a culture of discipline with an ethic of entrepreneurship, you get the magical alchemy of great performance.” (p. 13)
Wow! To eliminate hierarchy, bureaucracy, and excessive controls all we need is discipline. We need disciplined people, thinking, and people. From that Collins then noted how these factors work together. He wrote, “discipline action without disciplined thought is a recipe for disaster.” If you want to create a disaster— act without exercising disciplined thinking. That will mess things up and ruin whatever good you have done.
