How to be Precise in Coaching #1

GRAB AND DON’T LET GO!

When it comes to coaching and especially Meta-Coaching, you do not need a lot of information.  That’s because hidden within the client’s words are a world of information if you know how to listen and to inquire.  In order to tap into this resource, when a client speaks, listen with a ‘third ear’ using your knowledge of the Meta-Model of precision so that you can ask powerful questions and infer properly.  Imagine that your client says, “When I think about it, it is really hard.”

‘Hard’ here is one of the key words to listen for and explore.  So grab it.  Repeat back the word and then quote the client’s prior sentence in which the word occurred.  When you do this, you are doing an acknowledgment.  “I just hear you say that when you think about it, it is really hard.”  Now pause.  Say nothing!  Let silence do the work.  See how the person now responds to his own statement.
