STRANGE THINGS ABOUT DECISIONS
Having recently completed the Executive Decisions training, I became aware that there are some truly strange things about decisions. If you’re going to coach a client for and through a decision, you need to know these. If you’re going to become a Decision-Making Coach, you really need to know these.
First, all decisions are about the future. No one makes decisions about the past. It doesn;’t make any sense to say, “I’m going to ...” “I will...” with a reference to something past. [The only exception is if you decide to release the past and/or change your memory of the past.] In deciding, we say, “From this day forward I will...” or “I’m going to...” which reveals that decisions forecast the future of what you want, where you want to go, who you want to go with, etc.
Second, while no one can predict the future, decisions are part and parcel of our predictive thinking capacity. Even though the future is completely unknown and uncertain, we imagine it, anticipate it, guess about it, hope for it, dream about it. We have a brain that is forever anticipating what is yet to come.
