On Wednesday evening August 16, 2017 at the beginning of the dinner meal, Joe Brodnicki, my son Daniel, a few others, and I walked into the dining hall of the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI), at the foot of the Shenandoah Mountains in Virginia, 70 miles west of Washington DC. “Are you the Power Tools Group?” said the woman behind the platters of hot food. Initially surprised and amused by her question, we looked at each other, and then nodded to her. For the next four days, we were the Power Tools Group. A few days later, a new chef, taking over for the weekend, pulled Daniel aside and asked him about our power tools. In an environment that had courses on biodiversity or conservation, that was a good question. Daniel thought the chef expected our group to have work belts.
