It’s likely that you and I have passed through an educational system that was strongly grounded in theory X, based on the distinctions presented in McGregor’s 1960 model of Theory X and Y. The majority of schooling through the 1970s—1990s has been strongly grounded in the control and coercion model of Theory X. The education experience I had was one where the teacher was able to threaten with punishment if I did not comply and have at their disposal the use of corporal punishment if they so desired to use it. This was usually the use of a bamboo cane swiftly struck across my backside as many 6 times depending on the degree of dissatisfaction the teacher had with me.
