THE ART OF SUPERVISION

I learned something last week in Bali at the ACMC training.  I learned something that I had suspected for a long time, but had not articulated or realized its full implications.  I learned just how much ‘benchmarking’ differs from ‘supervision,’ and that what we really need to do at the ACMC trainings is provide supervision for the coaches-in-training, and not benchmarking.

The insight is this: Benchmarking is for assessment, not learning how to coach.  When you are learning how to coach, you do not need to be benchmarked.  You only need to know what you are doing that’s right and proper for effective coaching, and what to not do.  You only need to know which skills you are managing effectively, which skills you are not using which you need to use, and which skills go against proper coaching.  You not only do not need to be benchmarked, but you are completely not ready for that.  When learning benchmarking will not help you., it will only increase your anxiety.
